Book Chat on My Washington DC, Presidential Pets painting

Happy National Picture Book Month! Painting over 200 presidential pets was quite the task! I learned so many interesting facts about the pets who lived at the White House over the years. Check out the pair of alligators Hoover had roaming the lawns!

Please enjoy this book chat interview with my publisher, Little, Brown.

Who knew there were so many presidential pets?! @DeirdreEJones @KathyJakobsen #MyWashingtonDC #PictureBookMonth pic.twitter.com/cWtsJwen8x

Praise for My Washington, D.C.

Great reviews are pouring in for ‪My Washington, D.C‬.!  The book, published by Little, Brown/Hachette, hits stores September 6th and we can’t wait for you all to see it!

School Library Journal:

“…As readers pore over these illustrations of monuments, seats of government, and museums, they are also encouraged to search for eagles, stars, and a cat hidden in each picture, adding to the book’s interactive nature. An illustrated map highlighting each site visited as well as other prominent locations graces the endpapers, allowing readers to revisit their journey. VERDICT This merry work is a good choice for young readers who are curious about our capital as well as educators who want to introduce Washington, DC, before a trip or lesson.”

Kirkus Review:

“From Union Station to the Lincoln Memorial, Jakobsen’s double-page spreads depict the monuments and structures in Washington, D.C., that are highest in child appeal. Readers are invited to search each diverse, Where’s Waldo-esque crowd for two white tourists named Becky and Martin, a cat, and a total of 40 eagles and 300 stars. It is the oil paintings, however, that make this […]

Sept. 6th Book Release! And a flashback to Easter At The White House

Great news! I just heard news from my editor that the My Washington D.C. book release date is September 6th!

Actually, my history of painting Washington D.C. goes further back than this latest book project. In the mid-eighties I was very fortunate to be selected to paint Easter at the White House. I’ve included an article below describing this fun event.

I had a wonderful time meeting the kids and being part of the activities. It was a time when security wasn’t so strict, and you could go places where you wouldn’t be allowed now. After I got my clearance, I had the chance of a lifetime wandering around and enjoying the view of the south lawn from the balcony of the White House.

Little did I know, I would someday return to do a book on Washington D.C.. When I did the My New York book, I’d had the experience of living in Manhattan for years. But I’d never lived in Washington D.C., so I really had to dive into my research. This book did take longer to do, but I was […]

The Book is DONE!

After many years and many interruptions, the My Washington D.C. book is finally done! We had a fun road trip driving the paintings to my publisher Little, Brown/Hachette in Manhattan. It was an unadventurous trip (no flat tires), my favorite kind. It was nice to focus on the beautiful scenery instead of what I’ve been working on just twelve inches away.

It was fun to be back in the town where I used to live in Connecticut and to stay with my wonderful friend there. We even put together a last-minute book party for other friends and neighbors to show off the paintings before delivering them to the publisher.

The next day we were off to Manhattan with the book paintings carefully wrapped and packed. If I do say so myself, they created quite a sensation after being laid out on the board room table, interrupting the work of many employees in the children’s department as they came in to view the works. The consensus was “it was worth the wait!”, I was relieved to know (after spending nearly ten years on […]

Presidential Pets painting, quite a long list of pets!

I’ve been having so much fun researching and painting presidential pets for the next page of the book!
Which president kept an alligator in their guest bathtub to give his guests a nice surprise?
Our 6th President was given an alligator by the Marquis de Lafayette, a close friend of Washington, who also fought in our Revolutionary War. He kept it in a bathtub near the East Room!

My Washington D.C., a sneak peak into the book!

I finally, finally finished painting the White House interior! Just showing off and celebrating…..!!!!
This is a double page in the book….so much work and research!  It is 12 miniature paintings really, and they are as accurate as I can possibly make them!
Left to right: 3rd floor Lincoln Bedroom and Lincoln Sitting Room
2nd floor: State Dining Room, Red Room, Blue Room, Green Room, East Room
1st floor: Oval Office, (moved over from the West Wing), Map Room, Diplomatic Reception Room, China Room,  and Vermeil Room (it houses a collection of gold plated pieces)

Next painting to finish is another double page….the exterior of the Capitol
building!

A sneak peek of my upcoming book, My Washington D.C. Believe it or not, this is a closeup!
